Chocolicious Treats Make Life So Sweet
Taste is a very individual thing. Some people, like myself, crave salty snacks like chips, popcorn, and French fries. Other people have an insatiable sweet tooth, craving cookies, cakes and candies. And to a lesser degree, some people adore bitter or sour flavors on their palates. Palate preferences are as different as physical attraction; there is a fan of every kind, and something out there for everyone. But despite these variations in flavor predilection, there seems to be one particular taste which an extraordinarily large part of the population cherish and revere; chocolate! Thought by some to be an aphrodisiac, the rich, creamy texture and sweet, mellow taste of this delicious snack is, for many, simply ambrosia. Few can resist the melt-in-your-mouth quality of a good chocolate, even when it may sabotage their diet!
Chocolate is believe to be derived from somewhere within the Yucatan; having been sourced back to both the Aztec language of Nahuatl, and the Yucatec Mayan languages. They had their own unique spin on their chocolate, adding chili pepper to a bitter dark chocolate to give it a real kick. They drank liquefied versions of this chocolate drink as an elixir. It was later Europeans who added sugar, milk and vanilla in place of the chili pepper to create what we commonly know as “milk chocolate”.

Chocolate is much like wine in that there are very cheap versions, and very expensive versions. And while both do the trick in a pinch, there are truly worlds between a Hershey bar, and Godiva or Ghirardelli. Today’s Europeans will, in general, scoff at such American brands like Hershey’s, which is a very generic and yes, cheap version of the treat. Europeans take their chocolate very seriously, and if you don’t believe it, try and get a French person to eat a Hershey bar—and get ready to hear them scoff in disgust!
Because of its universal appeal, chocolate makes a great and easy gift. Given in abundance at Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and many other occasions, chocolate has become a staple item in the snack world of the American diet. Let’s face it: who doesn’t appreciate of morsel of chocolate?
